skip to content dear future daughter primary menu home book club the zine resources pops and feelings to a friend: i’m definitely not crying right now. *sniffle, sniffle* it’s okay, i’m okay, you’re okay, and with the right amount of medication, therapy, god, and voter registration efforts, the world will be okay. self-love is radical and hard. thanks for acknowledging that. it’s radical and hard to even imagine loving myself and taking up space in this world for the rest of my life. heck, existing is radical and hard. especially for a woman. (or maybe especially for a man, since their suicide rates are way higher. i imagine it’s a lot tougher for a man to ask a friend to pops and feelings. who knows? it’s not a competition.) and you not only want me to exist, but, like, do things and make mistakes and love and grow and learn and work and generally get out of bed every morning? pfft. one of the greatest things my therapist ever said was that life is a process. every time i remember that, i can let go of all the messy mistakes i’ve made that collectively make me want to not exist anymore and look forward to the future. all the cliches are annoying, but true. the thing is that when i see myself as a sad victim person, i don’t have to own up to my mistakes or feel the uncomfortable things. but i am also powerless and broken. when i see myself as a big agent person, i have to feel lots of uncomfortable, unpredictable things, but i can also be whoever i want to be. poet, journalist, friend, lover, whatever. and that’s radical. of course 18 is scary – i don’t get to blame my parents for ruining my life anymore! but in truth, i’m lucky to grow this old. i’m lucky that when my mom almost died giving birth to me, we both left that hospital breathing. i’m lucky that when i was 10 and got lost in washington, d.c., my mom found me pretty quick. i’m lucky depression didn’t kill me when i was 14 scrolling through tumblr for “depressed quotes” a lot. i’m lucky that when i was 15, my dad taught me not to be a scared driver (though perhaps using unconventional methods – “you can go, dummy, the light is yellow!!”) and i haven’t ever gotten into a crash or fender ender bumper or whatever you call it or even been pulled over since. all i wanted as a kid was for people to take me seriously, and maybe now that i’m turning 18, people will. sad victim person leans on other people a lot. big agent person drops inside for the love she needs first. that’s okay. everything will be okay. the fact that you’re here unconditionally through the awkwardness and agony and mess that is the teenage years means everything and i want to learn to do that for myself. well, maybe you weren’t expecting my life story, but there it is. that’s what you get for being nice to a writer! hahahahahahahaha. posted on august 6, 2018 august 6, 2018 by maya martin posted in dear brene tagged hypermasculinity , surviving suicide , turning 18 leave a comment open letter to hb/be still and know dear hannah brencher , i’m opening this two days later and you’ve got my writing brain firing and i have to say: shave off ten years give or take, get a bit of sun, and convert to islam and we’re basically the same person. and, apologies in advance for the soppy story. i’m gambling on the hope that we never meet in person so we don’t have to make small talk when you already know all this, and on the hope that you’re not actually an evil person who will post all this on instagram and tag me. continue reading “open letter to hb/be still and know” → posted on july 30, 2018 july 30, 2018 by maya martin posted in dear brene tagged 3am thoughts , gap year , hannah brencher , spirituality , turning 18 leave a comment project: save georgia from the trumpness yesterday, at the top of the hormone roller coaster, i texted my friend/mentor, “i feel like a person today!” woohoo! whereas last week consisted of lots of tears and sitting in bed, this week consisted of colorful dreams, hope for the future, battles with estrogen, trips to the vet’s office, awkward conversations about vomit , and marketplace adventures. so what does it mean to feel like a person? i’m currently working on about four projects: keeping this blog up to date and wonderful, applying to at least 15 jobs before monday, freelancing, and getting every muslim in georgia to vote by harnessing the power of social media. continue reading “project: save georgia from the trumpness” → posted on july 29, 2018 july 30, 2018 by maya martin posted in blog tagged for introverts , no muslim ban ever , turning 18 leave a comment why i’m taking a gap year: the long answer a couple of you asked why i decided to take a gap year, and maybe more of you are wondering. do i need to “find myself”? is it mental health? am i just not into the whole college thing anymore? am i just tired? continue reading “why i’m taking a gap year: the long answer” → posted on july 20, 2018 july 29, 2018 by maya martin posted in blog tagged agnes scott , dear readers , gap year , hospital , surviving suicide leave a comment more than coffee: my life between black and white when i learn about history, i see myself standing in ghana with the bloody atlantic washing at the backs of my feet, looking ahead at the white castles where my ancestors must have been taken. when i visit the castles, what will i feel? guilt or grief? vanilla or chocolate? vanilla or chocolate? since i have never met my black father or traced back that side of my history, are my roots forever snipped? can i claim this story as my own? if i come from a white family that is comfortably middle class, does that mean i have white privilege? what if my ancestors owned slaves? is this what race means? having questions without any right answers and asking them anyway? (sorry, abby wambach). in search of some soul soup, i started listening to the super soul sunday podcast. every sunday or so, oprah winfrey invites all these spiritual leaders and visionaries to her house under the oak trees and asks them scary questions like, “what does god mean to you?” and “walk me through the most traumatic thing that’s ever happened to you so we can all learn how to be this hulk strong,” etc. there’s researchers, comedians, priests, nuns, old presidents, tv anchors, the office stars, and pretty much anyone who ever struck oprah a certain way because when you’re rich and famous you can sap wisdom from anyone you
